Message From The Principal!

Francis Combe Academy is very happy to announce this year’s remarkable GCSE results.

49% of our Year 11 students achieved the gold standard of 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C including English and Maths. This is an enormous increase on last year’s figure of 31%, which was the first set of results achieved since Francis Combe became an Academy.

This transformation of our learners’ achievement is due to the focus we have placed on ensuring that all our learners experience success through achievement, as they see their lives being transformed through learning. The dedicated hard work of our teachers, non-teaching staff and students, with the support of their families, has lifted our youngsters’ achievement in these key exams, opening so many doors for them as they move into the sixth form, further education, training or employment.

Francis Combe Academy is moving into a new era of achievement, and our learners are given every opportunity to make their dreams a reality.

Ofsted Visit

Ofsted carried out a monitoring visit to the Academy in June 2011. Their report is here.

The intention of the monitoring visit was to assess progress since the establishment of the Academy in September 2009. The headline judgement is that the academy has made satisfactory progress, and the inspectors have recognised that the Academy’s new leadership team have begun to make real improvements that are having an impact.

Inspectors commented that there are “rising standards across the year groups.”

They were very impressed with our students’ behaviour and attitudes towards learning, saying, “Behaviour was good in lessons. Students were co-operative and worked well together in pairs and in groups.”

Inspectors were also struck by how much behaviour has improved: “Changes to the management of behaviour by teachers introduced by the new Principal are having a positive impact on learning. Students are pleased with the system, which they see as fair. One student spoke for many when he noted, ‘Lesson time is not lost to bad behaviour anymore. We can get on and learn.’”

Inspectors also noted how happy students are with the support they are given: “The students speak well of the pastoral support available and expressed confidence that there was always someone they could speak to when worried.”

Finally, inspectors were encouraged by the Academy’s leadership: “The academy has established a strong senior management team. HMI expressed their confidence in the senior team and the academy’s capacity to improve.”
